Ondel-ondel is a very popular in Jakarta. It is a giant doll with a
horrible face. The male ondel-ondel is dressed like a man. He has a sword at
his hip and shawl over his shoulder. Its head is decorated with colourful paper
strings.
Ondel-ondel is
made of bamboo structure. Its face is made of wood-mask. Its hair is made of
palm-fibre. A man inside the structure moves it. The movement is very clumsy.
Its arms are dropping. A pair of ondel-ondel are usually performed to celebrate
a child circumcision. Traditional music, i e. Gambang kromong, gasidah,
tanjidor, or gendang pencak, accompanies the procession. Of course children are
interested in following it.
In the old days people believe that a couple of ondel-ondels were
the manifestation of a god and goddess who would protect the circumcised boy
from danger or evil. Now ondel-ondel is performed to welcome guests in opening
ceremonies held in Jakarta and places nearby.

The Man Who Could
Turn Back the Clock
Adapted from a story by Ralph Milne Farley
Once upon a time, there was a man who had the power to
turn back the clock. Whenever he regretted something he had done or said, he
could repeat the event in the light of the experience.
Now, one day, it happened that this man was out for a
walk when it started to rain, so he took shelter in a barn. After a few minutes
the man was joined by a very beautiful young lady and her dog, who were also
seeking shelter. The downpour lasted about an hour.
The man went home to his wife and told her why he was
late. Immediately, her wife was suspicious of her husband’s behaviour with the
young lady. She questioned him about what had happened. The man replied in
surprised and hurt voice: “Why? Nothing happened. I was a perfect gentleman.
What do you expect? Especially when she had such a large dog with her.”
His wife was furious: “what? Only the dog stopped you?”
The man realized his mistake and immediately he turned
the clock back a few minutes and tried the conversation again. This time when
his wife expressed her suspicion, he said “it’s true the girl was very
beautiful and she seemed to like me. But my deep love for you gave me strength
to resist temptation.”
However, his wife was even more furious: “what? You
wanted to kiss her? An immoral thought is a bad as an immoral deed.’
The man spent long time thinking. There must be some way
to please his wife!
Finally
he turned the clock back again a few minutes. Once more his wife asked how he
had behaved with the young lady. But this time he replied: “What? She wasn’t
beautiful, She was ugly! I am a man with a good taste, which is why I married
you, my darling!”
When she heard this, his wife, who in fact was rather
unattractive, flung her arms around his neck and cried, “I love you.”

opinion, happiness is something very much relative in nature. For sure,
hapiness is hardly related to wealth. It does not follow that a rich person is
always a happy person. I have neighbours who we would very much characterize as
a poor family. In this family, the parents make their living by selling fried
noodles on the side of the road when evening comes. Although they have many
customers, because they sell very delicious noodles. I don’t think they earn
enough money to live luxuriously. Their income is just enough to buy food for
the family and to pay school fees for the children. But from my observation,
this is a happy family. They never complain about the hardship of life.
